Dress Up In Thoughts: My Top 5 Basic Style Tips For Men
Although we men have come a long way in terms of our style evolution, there are still many of us who are content to look like they floundered in the dark when dressing – and then can’t understand why people don’t take them seriously at work or why they can’t get a date. Sorting out your style is important, dressing well will not only make you feel better, but let others know you respect yourself and therefore expect to be treated that way by them. The way you dress is a reflection of your state of mind, and your state of mind is what people ultimately judge you for.
1. The Right Fit.
One of the most important yet neglected aspects of style is wearing clothes that fit properly. Shakespeare used to use ill-fitting clothes as a way of communicating that there was something not quite right about a character, that they can’t fill the role they have adopted. Don’t be a sham, be a genuine King and wear something that was made for your size. |
2. Less Is More People have to look at you, so respect their eyes and try not to overload their senses. Keep your look simple and as a general rule never exceed three colours. Make sure that your top and bottom match in terms of colour and style (for instance jogging bottoms with a formal shirt sends mixed signals). Don’t dress too flamboyantly unless it suits your personality, at least not initially – people who dress this way and pull it off are usually familiar with how dressing well works, they are getting away with breaking the rules because they intrinsically understand them. |
3. Dress for Context Throwing on ‘whatever is lying around’ suggests you’re lazy and therefore have no regard for either yourself or anyone else. Dress appropriately for each situation. A boss wearing jeans and his favourite Ramones T-shirt at work suggests that he’d rather be slobbed out in front of the TV watching a box set of Game Of Thrones than running a company – if he doesn’t dress with respect then why should he expect any from his employees? Likewise, you should always be sure to dress down for casual social gatherings or you’ll come across as a jobs-worth. |
4. Accessorise It is important not to go overboard with accessories, unless you’re a big playa in the Hood or have a side-line in rapping about excessive wealth then you’re probably best being minimal with the bling. That’s not to say you shouldn’t accessorise at all. Adding a necklace or tie with a bracelet or watch can really complete an outfit and let the world know that you’re someone who cares about the details. 5. Logos Wearing clothing with logos on makes you look like a billboard, if there is writing on what you’re wearing then the designer has failed to make it look good – this is fashion not advertising. If you have a brand name on your top then it is a sure sign that you’re desperately after some status respect, but it is also the most sure-fire way of letting the world know you don’t really have any. |
